Trust and Do Not Be Afraid
Today’s Through the Bible Reading: 2 Chronicles 19-20; Psalm 46-48
Abbreviated Reading: 2 Chronicles 19-20
“Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD…” 2 Chronicles 20:17
The Old Testament records the history of mankind and in so doing, it holds a plethora of war and military exploits. Nations rising up to conquer other nations then falling as one stronger takes its place. Conflict between kings is a constant theme throughout the Scriptures. And the Bible tells us there’s nothing new under the sun. As long as this world carries on, the pattern of war will continue (Matt. 24:6-13). Ultimately, it’s the result of sin and man’s fallen nature.
Yet, God promised to be with His people amidst the battles they fought. In fact, He did not just promise to be with them, He promised to fight the battle for them.
Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's… Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you 2 Chronicles 20:15, 17 NIV
In today’s reading the Lord literally fights a battle for Israel! God promised King Jehoshaphat that Israel wouldn’t have to fight against the Moabites and Ammonites this time, rather His instruction to Israel was to simply trust and stand firm (2 Chr. 20:15-17).
Sound familiar? This is what God promises to us. Remember, in every Old Testament story there’s a picture of a New Testament principle. God has triumphed over this fallen, fractured, fighting world. He fought the battle for us and was victorious. Just like Israel in today’s reading, we have to put on our armor (Eph. 6), trust in the Lord, and stand firm.
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4 NKJV
So whether you hear of physical wars raging around the world or just feel the very real spiritual battles around you, know this: God is mighty to save. Stand firm, in Jesus’ name!
